My Birdies are Flying the Coup ...

Well, after trying his wings around the area since leaving school in March, Josiah left town on Monday to take a job in Dallas. I miss him like crazy, but I am very proud of him for following his dream of leaving home and making it on his own. We are blessed to have friends there who helped him get the job and are helping him find housing, etc. I know that he is safe and happy there, and I am glad.

Josiah has been looking forward to striking out on his own for a long time. Last September, when we had the children's pictures made, he asked (while they were choosing props) if he could be photographed with a suitcase in his hand!

I know there are those who will say that he is selfish for leaving home in the midst of my current health crisis. I want those people to know that he went with our blessing. The fact is that my health is OFTEN in or near crisis mode, and he as a young adult has every right to start his own life. I never want to prevent any of my children from becoming the adults that God desires them to be. Like I have reminded Don for years, "We are not raising children; we are raising adults."

The funny thing is that I have talked to him more since he left than I ever did when he was home! He calls me often, and I am always happy to hear from him.

Fly free, Josiah! I love you, son!

:-) Sharon

P.S. -- My legs are still solid underneath me, with no new troubling symptoms. One week from tonight, the surgery will already be behind me!

Congratulations, Sharon! You have achieved what every parent wants to...you have made your child comfortable enough to want and actually go ahead and leave the coup! That is absolutely fantastic! Be watching your mail! :o)

Dear Sharon,
Hi my name is Danielle and im 15. I searched your son Josiah's name on the internet in hopes of contacting him but instead i got to you haha. I saw him on American Idol last night and I was touched by his life story and it made me realize how lucky I am to have such an amazing relationship with my family. I just wanted to let you know that I am hopeful that you and your son can be as close as my mom and I. I wish Josiah luck in everything he does. Please let him know. Thanks(:

After watching your son not make it on American Idol I literally sat on my sofa and cried. Ever since I saw his audition I knew he was amazingly talented. His story of living in his car and still have a passion for music inspired me to dream big and never give up hope. After watching him sing and cheer on other contestants I even told my parents I need to find myself a guy like this. I would like to congradulate you on raising an amazing son and I wish him luck. I would also like to say how sorry I am for your condition. Some of my family memebers have struggled with cancer and I know that it is a hard time especially for people close to you. Keep hope and don't lose faith of your future. You sound like a strong and wonderful mother and I am sure that your children love you very dearly. Good Luck to both you and your son!!

dear sharon,
my name is courtney, i live in missouri, and im 17.i watch american idol like it is a drug! when i saw josiah on his first audition , and how passionate he was in music,i automatically fell in love with him!!! he seams like such a sweet guy.if he left right when you were in the middle of batteling cancer,it sounds like he did it for the best! then when i saw him in his second audition, and when he sang MY FAVORITE SONG!!, i could totally tell he loves doing what he does{singin, playin piano....}!!! simon said in the third audition that he was over cofident and selfish!!! he is never happy with anything!!! when josiah was kicked off i went in my room and balled my eyes out! i guess pula was right...he has something that makes all the girls fall inlove with him.
so i tried to go online to try to find a way to contact him or something and i ran across a picture of him with the link uder it and it said "my life with cancer.com" and so i checked it out. so i read ur story and loved how you respected him leaving home and becoming independent! so i just wanted to say god bless and good luck...oh and one biggg favor??? would you say to josiah tht im his biggest biggest fan and im rootin for him all the way??? once again god bless and ill be prayin for yah!

You are incredibly lucky to be Josiah's mom!! I'm fourteen and everyday i go on YouTube and listen to his songs because, for some reason, hearing them just makes me feel really smiley and happy. Then throughout the whole day i go around humming them. I love Josiah, not of course as much as you love him :), but I love his music and how kind he is. I hope you're doing well.
luv, emily
